Both are Ricoh production presses, and both print clean work. But each is built for a different print shop: the C9100 earns from volume, and the C7200X earns from special work. Choose wrongly and you either pay for a machine bigger than your work, or find yourself turning down orders you cannot produce.
This comparison uses the numbers we see in real operation, not brochure numbers.
The short answer
- Take the Ricoh Pro C9100 if your work is high daily volume: catalogues, magazines, brochures, light packaging, and heavy stock up to 400 gsm.
- Take the Ricoh Pro C7200X if you want to sell work others do not offer: gold and silver, white on coloured paper, glossy clear, neon, and banners up to 126 cm.

Difference one: volume
The C9100 is faster by 25 pages a minute. That looks small, but over an eight-hour shift of continuous work it means about 12,000 more pages a day. Its monthly volume is up to one million pages, against 700,000 for the C7200X.
More important than speed, it is built to run all day without strain: its main trays hold 4,400 sheets, so the operator is not standing there loading paper every few minutes.
If your monthly work is still far from hundreds of thousands of pages, you will not use that speed. You will have paid for production capacity that sits idle.
Difference two: the fifth colour
For many people this settles the decision. The C7200X has a fifth-colour station that prints with CMYK in the same pass, with seven options:
- Gold and silver: premium cards, covers and invitations printed in one pass with the other colours.
- White: printing on coloured, kraft and clear stock.
- Clear: spot gloss on parts of the design.
- Neon yellow and neon pink: colours that catch the eye on posters and stickers.
- Invisible red: shows under ultraviolet light, for tickets and coupons.
The C9100 has no fifth colour at all. If your customer asks for a card in gold, or white print on black paper, you will have to decline or send them elsewhere.
This work comes in smaller quantities but at a higher price, and with less competition, because not every print shop has the machine to do it.
Difference three: paper
Here each has its own strength:
- Weight: the C9100 takes up to 400 gsm and prints it on both sides automatically. The C7200X stops at 360 gsm. If your work is light packaging and heavy cards, those 40 gsm matter.
- Length: the C7200X prints banners up to 126 cm, and the C9100 goes to 70 cm. If you produce fold-out menus, long book covers or banners, the C7200X is the one that fits.
Difference four: quality
Both image with a 40-beam VCSEL laser, and both give excellent results on commercial work. The difference is in fine detail:
- The C7200X runs at 2400 × 4800, twice the dots per inch in the laser direction. It shows in very small type, thin lines and fine ornament.
- The C9100 runs at 1200 × 4800 and processes each dot at 256 intensity levels, so gradients, shadows and dark solids come out smooth.
On an ordinary catalogue or brochure you will not tell them apart by eye. The difference appears in fine work such as invitations and ornament.
Difference five: toner cost
Both run on a toner set at the same price, but the C9100 uses less toner on the same job: its set prints about 15,000 sheets, and the C7200X set about 13,000. This is the toner of each job, by order, on the two machines:
| Job | Order | C9100 | C7200X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poster one side · 1 per sheet100 posters | 100 posters | EGP 79 | EGP 91 |
| Folded A4 brochure two sides · 2 per sheet1,000 brochures | 1,000 brochures | EGP 416 | EGP 480 |
| Product stickers one side · 35 per sheet5,000 stickers | 5,000 stickers | EGP 154 | EGP 177 |
| A5 flyer two sides · 4 per sheet1,000 flyers | 1,000 flyers | EGP 299 | EGP 345 |
| Book or magazine cover one side · 1 per sheet500 covers | 500 covers | EGP 610 | EGP 704 |
| Wedding cards one side · 4 per sheet500 cards | 500 cards | EGP 178 | EGP 205 |
| A3 menu two sides · 1 per sheet100 menus | 100 menus | EGP 224 | EGP 258 |
| Business cards two sides · 24 per sheet1,000 cards | 1,000 cards | EGP 115 | EGP 132 |
| One sheet of everyday press work33 × 48 cm, one side | 33 × 48 cm, one side | EGP 1.77 | EGP 2.04 |
The figures come from everyday press work on the 33 × 48 cm sheet, a quarter of the full sheet. A job printed on both sides is counted with both sides. All prices are in Egyptian pounds.
So if you print 10,000 sheets a month of everyday press work, toner for the C9100 is about EGP 17,700 and for the C7200X about EGP 20,400. The difference is about EGP 2,700 a month, and it grows with volume.
The calculation is on a toner set at EGP 26,500 in Egypt. Prices change, so confirm the current price. The fifth colour on the C7200X is costed separately, by how much you use it. If you want the figure for your own work, ask us and we will work it out with you.
Difference six: space and power
Many people forget this item until installation day:
- The C9100 line is about 4.57 m long and weighs about 1,332 kg, and needs two 30 A power lines. Check your floor and your distribution board before you buy.
- The C7200X line is about 3.37 m and 922 kg, and runs on two 16 A lines. It fits in places the C9100 will not.
In both cases leave about one metre in front of the line for operation and service.
So how do I choose?
Ask yourself three questions:
- How much do you print a month? If your work is in the hundreds of thousands of pages and growing, the C9100 carries the load comfortably and at a lower toner cost. If it is far below that, the C7200X at up to 700,000 pages is more than enough.
- What do your customers ask for? Catalogues and corporate print in volume: C9100. Invitations, cards, gift boxes and event work: C7200X.
- What do you want to compete on? Price and speed of delivery: C9100. Work nobody else has: C7200X.
And if your work includes both kinds, the two complement each other: the C9100 for daily production, and the C7200X for special work.
